But if The Vengeance of She doesn’t live up to the lurid advertising (”The ultimate female who used her beauty to bring kingdoms to their downfall… and men to their knees!” reads the exploitation copy), it turns out to be a surprisingly eventful and entertaining supernatural adventure tale. Unable to secure Ursula Andress to reprise her role from She, Hammer went to Czechoslovakia for the well-endowed blonde sexpot Olinka Berova, who is fine as Carol, the Scandinavian blonde (with the Eastern European accent) haunted by dreams and visions that draw her deep into Africa to the secret kingdom of Kuma. Edward Judd is the lovesick psychiatrist Dr. Philip Smith, who discovers that her delusion is the work of an evil priest whose mind control of Carol is the key to his bid for immortality. Director Cliff Owen makes the most of the ocean and desert locations in the first half, overcoming budgetary restrictions with impressive images, before the films descends into the underground kingdom for the set-bound conclusion. If the drama slackens, locked in these dark cavelike sets, it remains a surprisingly compelling and inventive sequl with a smart screenplay (written by Peter O’Donnell, the creator of the “Modesty Blaise” comic strip) that sqUzes plenty of plot into a low budget. –Sean Axmaker

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s epic adaptation of Alfred Doblin’s German novel, written (and set) between two world wars in the 20th century, is still every bit the towering achievement it appeared to be upon the episodic, 15-hour film’s 1983 theatrical release in America. The story of a hapless lug buffeted by forces of discontent and disastrous change in Germany–following the country’s defeat at Versailles and during the rise of the Third Reich–Berlin Alexanderplatz is a roaming, hulking nightmare about people with no control over their destinies. The film opens with central character Franz Biberkopf (Gunter Lamprecht) struggling to reintegrate into the world after a four-year incarceration for murdering his girlfriend. Half-mad with guilt, sensory overload, sexual starvation and general disorientation, Franz goes in search of a plan for survival but finds the ground constantly shifting beneath his feet. Hooking up with the docile Lina (Elisabeth Trissenaar), Franz vows to straighten out his life and avoid his old tendencies toward petty thievery and pimping. But the alternatives are typically eclipsed by bad luck, unstoppable impulses, temptation and violent opposition between crime and order, Communists and fascists, dreamers and scoundrels. Over time, Franz becomes everything from shoelace salesman to Nazi sympathizer to pawn of a crime boss to victim of his fate. Along the way, he falls apart repeatedly, then picks himself up to see what might come next. Unfortunately, what comes next is generally another peek into the social and economic chaos of his time. Fassbinder, who died at age 36 before Berlin Alexanderplatz was released theatrically in America, found in Doblin’s story something akin to the running theme of despair in his own, prolific output of 40 movies. Among his several masterpieces, Berlin Alexanderplatz is in a leagu of its own, not to be missed. –Tom Keogh

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling horror novel than a complete reimagining of it from the inside out. In King’s book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick’s movie is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel’s labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook mirror the emptiness in the soul of the blocked writer, who’s settled in for a long winter’s hibernation. As many have pointed out, King’s protagonist goes mad, but Kubrick’s Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is Looney Tunes from the moment we meet him–all arching eyebrows and mischievous grin. (Both Nicholson and Shelley Duvall reach new levels of hysteria in their performances, driven to extremes by the director’s fanatical demands for take after take after take.) The Shining is terrifying–but not in the way fans of the novel might expect. When it was redone as a TV miniseries (reportedly because of King’s dissatisfaction with the Kubrick film), the famous topiary-animal attack (which was deemed impossible to film in 1980) was there–but the deeper horror was lost. Inspired by the “Space Seed” episode of the original TV series, the film reunites newly promoted Admiral Kirk with his nemesis from the earlier episode–the genetically superior Khan (Ricardo Montalban)–who is now seeking revenge upon Kirk for having been imprisoned on a desolated planet. Their battle ensus over control of the Genesis device, a top-secret Starfleet project enabling entire planets to be transformed into life-supporting worlds, pioneered by the mother (Bibi Besch) of Kirk’s estranged and now-adult son. While Mr. Spock mentors the young Vulcan Lt. Saavik (then-newcomer Kirstie Alley), Kirk must battle Khan to the bitter end, through a climactic starship chase and an unexpected crisis that will cost the life of Kirk’s closest friend. This was the kind of character-based Trek that fans were waiting for, boosted by spectacular special effects, a great villain (thanks to Montalban’s splendidly melodramatic performance), and a deft combination of humor, excitement, and wondrous imagination. Director Nicholas Meyer (who would play a substantial role in the success of future Trek features) handles the film as a combination of Moby Dick, Shakespearean tragedy, World War II submarine thriller, and dazzling science fiction, setting the successful tone for the Trek films that followed. –Jeff Shannon
